TLA kayak fishing report June 2020

Written by The Lost Anchovy

Marin/Pacifica  – June 12, 2020

The summer is here and the fishing is picking up for many of our favorite species. From Marin to Monterey the fishing is picking up and kayak anglers are making their way into the ocean, lakes and bay.

Summer is here. Looking to get into kayak fishing? Drop by our California Canoe and Kayak stores to Demo and try out a kayak today. The friendly staff will get you situated and set up to go. Tell them TLA sent you!

King Salmon:

Let’s start with the Kings of the Coast. The grade of King Salmon this year is the best we have seen for some time. There is a mix of fish but we are seeing large king salmon in June. Pacifica (Linda Mar/Rockaway) and Bolinas (Dux) are producing some large King Salmon. These are both advance fishing grounds because of the surf launches.  Kayak anglers are mainly trolling for salmon but mooching is a great technique when fishing around big bait balls. Remember to look for scattered and harassed bait balls to find the feeding fish.

California Halibut:

The California Halibut continues to be solid outside and inside the bay.  From Marin to Monterey the Halibut action is solid. Picking good tides in the bay is absolutely critical to getting on the bite.  The fishing is good now in Tomales, Berkeley to Richmond pt.  Starting in July when the water warms, and bait is plentiful you will see this CHOVY target the Berkeley Flats by TI for large California Halibut.

Crabbing:

Crabbing in June normally is a good bet before the season ends. I went out of the Pacifica area recently and got many sport-sized crab. The grade of crab are small but limits can still be worked for.  Try crabbing at Half Moon bay and target the reefs between the green and red can for a limit of crab and rockfish.  It is possible salmon can also be in the area so be prepared.

Mackinaw Trout:

If you are a fresh water fisherman, the mackinaw trout is starting to pick up in the sierras. CCK fishing Team member Bee Xiong, recently landed a personal best 33’Mackinaw Trout fishing at Union Valley Reservior. Bee will be giving a CCK kayak fishing seminar on August 22, 2020.  Details will be coming soon.

NOTE:

Per Allen Bushnells fish rap report. There was a recent squid spawn in Capitola that has pulled in halibut and some White Sea Bass.

“The big commercial bait boats are working near Capitola right now. There is a significant squid spawn occurring in that area, and many anglers are finding nice halibut in 40-70 feet of water from Pleasure Point down to Rio Del Mar. A few white sea bass were reported caught near the squid spawns, let’s hope they continue.”

I noticed that there are multiple Green cans out in Half Moon Bay. Are you talking about the Green can at the SouthEast REEF? or the Green one closer to the harbor?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Bob, The nearest green can. That area has a reef and sand. Fish can be found near the red can. Trying jigging up for a lingcod and some RF. There is heavy pressure in the area so it may not alway produce. Best of luck –TLA
