Kayak Fishing Essential Skills and Accessories

Kayak fishing is growing industry, in fact, it’s Booming!  There can be no doubt about that.  When I started fishing, over ten years ago, there were a handful of us. We were a tight knit community and information got around quickly. Fish were killed and we got them often.

As the sport grew, and the community matured, Kayak anglers can be seen scattered through out the bay and ocean. Some have organized clicks, while others enjoy fishing alone. (To each their own).  I’ve enjoyed meeting all the new faces but also know there are many out there, still on the fence, about joining our community and taking the plunge forward.

It’s scary. I know. You have a lot of questions.  You need a lot of answers. You want to catch fish. You want to be safe. You spent how much on that Kayak?

WHERE DO I BEGIN!!??

I’ve been there and I’ve done that.  I feel your reservations, because they were my own. So I’m excited to work with CCK (California Canoe and Kayak) to answer some of kayak fishing basic questions that I think us veterans take for granted. What essential gear should all Kayakers, beginner or advance, have with them at all times?

Comfort Gear

Drysuit: Is a dry shell (onesies) with socks that should keep your clothes dry if used properly. It has good neck gasket and wrist gaskets. It also feels restrictive at the neck because of the gasket. For warmth, you’ll need to layer properly. Proper base layers; pullover fleece sweater, thermal pants. Make sure you have proper shoes to protect the dry socks as it’s expensive to replace and fix.

Wetsuit: Will keep you warm if you get wet you body heat warms up water between you and the fabric to maintain the warmth. Good snug fits required without a lot of extra fabric.

What Types of Kayaks do you offer at CCK? What is the differences between them?

We have various type of kayaks that fit beginners to advanced paddlers. Most fishing people will go for sit-on-top and the Hobie Peddle drive is the most popular. We have a full line for Hobie Kayaks in both peddle and paddle style. You can rent it by the hour or by the day.

What essential skills do all kayakers need in order to be safe?

Kayak Surf Crash
Kayak Surf Crash

Good paddling & rescue Skills. If you have a peddle kayak and your peddle breaks 4-5 miles out (which happens to me) the only way to get back is paddle. That said…it depends on where you want to go. If you plan to launch from a surf a good surf zone skills is necessary.  “Always good to have but not use it than needing and not having it”.

Self rescue skills are important to have. Being able to self rescue yourself out on the water is an essential skill that all kayakers need to have before going out on the water.

Is there a PFD that you would recommend for a beginner angler thinking of getting into the sport?

There are three style of PFD; pullover, side entry, and front entry. They are all Coast Guard approved. I don’t necessary have a recommend on this one: A good PFD is the one that you feel comfortable in and use it while you’re one the water.

Types of PFD

  • Type I PFDs are geared for rough or remote waters where rescue may take a while. Though bulky, they have the most buoyancy and will turn most unconscious people into a face-up position. They are the kind of PFD you’ll likely find on commercial vessels. Type I PFDs are available in inherently buoyant, inflatable or hybrid designs.
  • Type II PFDs are intended for calm inland waters, where fast rescue is likely. They have a very basic design that is less bulky than Type I, and typically less expensive, but they are not as comfortable as Type III. They will turn some unconscious wearers to the face-up position. Type II PFDs come in inherently buoyant, inflatable or hybrid designs.
  • Type III PFDs are suitable for most paddlers where there is a chance for quick rescue. They offer freedom of movement and comfort for continuous wear. These PFDs are designed so wearers can put themselves in a face-up position, but they may have to tilt their head back to avoid being face down in water. Type III PFDs come in inherently buoyant, inflatable or hybrid designs.
  • Type IV PFDs are flotation devices that are meant to be thrown to a conscious person who is in trouble and provide backup to a PFD. Examples include life rings and buoyant cushions. Type IV PFDs are not meant to be worn and they are not required for canoes, kayaks or SUPs.
  • Type V PFDs are considered special-use devices and intended for specific activities. To be acceptable by the USCG, they must be worn at all times and used for the activity specified on the label. Varieties include kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, deck suits and hybrid inflatable vests. Type V PFDs come in inflatable or hybrid (inherently buoyant and inflatable) designs.
