Fishing Report Spring 2016
The spring is here and the fish are starting to awake from the winter hibernation.It’s time to get out and fish. Here is the early spring report.
The Delta
The delta is starting show signs of life after a cold winter. There has been reports of good bass in the upper delta ranging from 25 -40 inches. The top water bite is happening if anglers can find the right location. The winter sturgeon bite will continue due to the impending storms and fresh water rushing into the main delta channel. Cache and Prospect sloughs are good locations to target this elusive fish. Eel and roe continue to produce.
The Bay
Halibut, Halibut, Halibut!! The halibut bite is starting to warm up. After the winter herring spawn, the bay is starting to transition over to the spring bite. The south bay is a good bet for this time of year. Oyster Point Marina and ARW (Alameda rock wall) are the spots to start targeting halibut in the spring. The bass and butt combo can also be found in the Berkeley flats trolling. There have also been reports of halibut being caught off the paradise park pier.
The Ocean
The ocean continues to get hammered by the large swells and winds from the winer storms. Crabs have been difficult to target due to weather conditions since the sport opener a few weeks ago. The crabs have mainly ranged between 6-6.5 inches with many females and shorts in the mix. The crabs are in their breeding and molting stage so targeting them around May and June, after they have molted and breed, will produce better crab counts. (quality and quantity)

Lake Mendocino has started to heat up. The strip bass are on the bite with A-rigs and live bait. Try the areas next to the boat ramp and near the mouth of the creek. Bait is abundant and the fish are feeding on the pinhead shad.
Clear Lake– The crappie bite has been red hot. The main action has been in the back channels adjacent to the like. The bucket brigade has come out in numbers to decimate the population. There is a 25 fish limit per day, so make sure to follow regulations. Catch what you need and release the rest.
San Luis Resevior (Forebay)- The bite has been moderate in the big reservoir. The forebay has a lot of smaller shakers and some keepers. The best bet have been on A-Rigs and live bait. I had too much fun at the fish and chill, so my memory “maybe” a little hazy, but I remember catching fish…Or did I???
Lake Tahoe – I went to explore Lake Tahoe, last week, to target the elusive Mackinaw trout. Unfortunately due to the unpredictable weather the fishing was put on hold. The action, based on reports, has been around the “Cave Rock” boat launch area. Jigging and trolling along the ledges is producing 5-8 lb mackinaw trout. White jigs pinned with minnow or scented with pro-cure is a good bet.
