San Diego Yellowfin Tuna
Prelude
Crew: “Let’s hit up the Tuna Keith”
Keith: “Dude are you serious…F*XCK, What are the reports saying”
Crew: “HOT!!!, Let’s get on it”
Keith: “Damn…”

Won, Andrew (The Slave), Tim, Dan, and I decided that our next trip needed to be down south to get on some of the Hot Tuna action that has been the norm down there. In fact, Tim has been pushing us to get on the bite for about a month now.

–The weekend results wouldn’t disappoint.

Prior to going, the day was already off to a bad start.

*Fishing report was bad
*My salmon on AOTY got DQed on some BS
*Dan’s Dog almost died
*and I threw out my back just before leaving

But like a true addicts we worked through it to get our fix!!!

The Trip Starts

With the long holiday weekend to start we all decided to meet up at my house to caravan down south. The weather for the weekend looked to be FAC, and prefect all around

LOOKING GOOD!!

Arriving at La Jolla

We drove all night and arrived at La Jolla in the early morning to calm seas and small shore breaks. We loaded up and was OTW by 7:45 a.m. after an eventful situation with Tim’s car getting stuck in the sand.

We started marking bait outside the MLPA and got on some big schools of Mackerel, but to our surprise they wouldn’t bite, so making bait was damn near impossible. However, Andrew the slave, had the hot hand and was able to pull 7 macs that he stored away “secretly” in his bait container.

Things got so bad with the bait situation that I ended up trolling a watermelon apex around in hopes of impaling a stupid yellowtail in the brain.

The day was pretty uneventful except for around 3:00 p.m. when Slave’s
flyined HUGE mack gets slammed near the kelp. I hear from a distance… “GUYS I’M ON!!!” and we see his pole go BENDO with line ripping from it. Almost as fast as he got on we hear “AAWWWHHH!!! It’s off!!” From a distance we see Andrews head down and crying.

I couldn’t help but be entertained by this, given the fact that he was hiding his macs from us all day. LOL!! I’m sure I over hear someone say “Good, he deserve that sht.” (In a supportive way of course) LOL…Too funny

We accepted our skunk and waited for better days ahead.

Day 2, Charters and Yellowfin

With the less than memorable day behind us we loaded up our fishing tackle and rods into the cars and arrived at the fishing docks by 5 a.m. and was soon on the water by 6:15 .a.m.

The mission belle loaded up on some fresh frisky MACS from the bait receivers and got us on our way. We trolled for about and 1.5 -2.0 hours with no strikes.

YELLOWFIN TUNA FEEDING FRENZY!!

After 2 hours we rolled up on some breaking fish and immediately one of the trolling poles goes off!! The boat stops and the deckhand starts to chum around the boat.

The boat captains yells through the speakers “Put them down guys, I’m getting pretty good marks here” People started to scramble for their poles and load up their lines with fresh bait. Immediately pole after pole starts to LOAD UP, GO BENDO, and PEELS Lines. It didn’t take long before we realize that…

-We were in the middle of a TUNA FEEDING FENZY (It’s on like Donkey Kong!!!)

As the sardines starts to run away from the boat we would see BIG SPLASHS and the sardine getting hammered by a skipjack or yellow fin. With the water so clear, we saw, huge schools of yellow fin and skip jack tuna attacking the bait.

Most people fished bait and some threw lures through the schools of bait. By the end of the frenzy the deck was bloody, arms were tired, and people were all smiles.

PART II TUNA

The same scenario, played out through the day with a few smaller frenzies along the way. Around 3:00 p.m. the boat pulls up on another frenzy, but this time it was apparent the grade of TUNA was a lot bigger.

For 41 anglers only 5 hooked up and our very own TIM (KRUSTY) got a HUGE BENDO on a VERY LARGE FISH. He worked the pole amid a cluster of tangles. As the fish pulled, the pole bend, and the drag pulling it was apparent the fight was turning against him. The cluster of tangles eventually became too much and the fish comes off! and with it Tim’s first chance of landing his first BIG Yellowfin Tuna.
