Cali Hali at the Great Wall of Alameda

Cali Hali at the Great Wall of Alameda

Ouch…Ouch…Ouch…Good god, help me. I’m so sore from chasing salmon. Just a few more minutes…(SNORING)
Whispering in my head…. “you know you wanna piece of that butt?”
“I do…I do, but I’m so sore”
Whispering gets louder…”Get up you Pansy”

BEEP BEEP BEEP, the alarm rings. I reluctantly open my eyes. The grey clouds rolled through the horizon and the wind gently rustled the leaves on the trees. I rolled out of bed, uncertain if staying in would prove more satisfying today.

I warmed the clunky old car and packed six sex herring into the hand cooler. I reversed the clunker out of the garage and was on my way before my dog was awake.

The morning traffic was light and made for an easy commute. I pulled up to the launch ramp next to a few parked cars from hopeful bank fisherman tossing lures in the distance. The morning breeze rippled the surface of the water while in the distance a group of birds worked a small school of scattered bait. Life was abundant and I had “THAT” feeling that all old sea dogs get before the bite turns on. Heck yeah!

I was OTW by 7 a.m., and in time to work the end of the incoming tide. I darted straight for the flagpole and found the ledge. The bait hugged the edges and I hugged the bait. The incoming tide slowed to a crawl and the water turned flat with the occasional fish jumping. With no action, I moved towards the end of the wall and found schools of bait floating through the water column.

As I trolled under the bait the tip of the pole gets bumped! I pulled up the line and the herring was scratched up. Argh! Pinned on another shinny candy and send it down.

The morning passed and by 11:00 a.m., I get my first undersized butt, a nice 20 incher that was safely released.   By 11:30 a.m the water started moving fast. The FF marked stacks of bait up and down the water column with suspecting arcs surrounding them. The water came alive with the outgoing tide.

The current drags the dodger and herring under and skips the weight along the muddy bottom. Suddenly, the rod tip ticks then SLAMS down violently.

FISH ON!!

It jerks and peels line off the reel before slowly coming to a stand still. The trip of the rod bends over and drags the fish along the muddy bottom. I lifted the pole from the rod holder and slowly take back line. Then if by instinct, the fish takes off. ZZZZzzz the line pulls off the line. The head shakes and tugging gave her away.

HALIBUT!!!

As she comes off the bottom, I see the flasher then a beautiful rug arise from the green water. She sees the boat and sprints one last time into the depths. As she resurfaces again, I pull my net and place it under her before she runs directly inside. She splashes the water white then floats in the net.

I clipped her, and pulled the hook out. She makes a futile attempt to shake off the game clip but eventually succumbs to the inevitable. She measures out 27 inches on the board.

I look up and see 4 boats rushing my direction and drop their bait on my spot.Grrrr…. I put my gear away and started heading back before the wind picked up.

I arrive on land loaded my yak, and gear, in the car and iced the fish. I looked back one last time and remembered all the reason why I love living in the bay.

  1. Wow, awesome report Keith. Nice job on some halis man. I want to hit up ARW so bad with my new Revo 13 since I’m only 5 minutes away. I took it to Lafayette on sat the first time for bass. Just waiting for a hookup at ARW so I can tag along.

    Nice work man, congrats.
