“Half Moon Bay Salmon Slam”
I’m on a salmon mission to repay some debts and try to make some food for the winter. The salmon fishing will be coming to an end soon and now is the time make it happen or see an empty freezer by winter.
Woke up at 5:00 a.m. and made my way to HMB for some salmon love. Arrive at the old pier by 6:00 a.m. and OTW by 6:35. I made my way pass the opening of the harbor and was greeted with big bait balls.
Early Morning Action
By 8:00 a.m. I started seeing some action in the fleet. Three boats connected right in front of the green can! Wow…It was shaping to be a good day on the water. I put my trolling gear together and started working the area around the green can. By 8:30- 8:45 a.m. I saw Tim, Tony and Won come out of the harbor for some Salmon love.
By 8:45a..m it was on like Donkey Kong! Boaters were getting hook ups all around us. I immediately started marking big bait balls near the green can and trolled with a little more purpose.
Immediately after marking the bait, my pole takes a big hit and starts to BOUNCE HARD! FISH ON!! ZZZZzzzz I grabbed my pole and started to reel in the fish. Then I hear Won in the background …”Hey Keith you on?” … Yes sir!
I guess I drank too much coffee cause I got that fish next to my boat in 10 seconds. I looked at that beast (20+ lbs) eye to eye before it decided to make a fight out of it. It immediately takes a dive and starts to take some massive salmon runs! And pops off the hooks!! ARGH!!! Are you kidding me!? I had to be on Suicide watch for about 10 minutes. I put my loss behind and started to troll again. After about and hour, I spoke with two guys that were consistently hooking up and quickly switched to the mooch. Jigged up fresh bait and sent it down around the bait balls.
Redemption
After about 30 minutes…I get a TAP TAP TAP on my lines and slowly reel in my bait. FISH ON!! The smaller salmon took some hard runs and ran like a 30 lber. I got it to the boat and landed on short fashion.
The Finale
I fished with the crew until about 2:30 p.m. I was about to call it day when I thought I would give it another 20 minutes. I dropped a fresh chovie to the bottom than had a bright idea that moving it might entice a bite. Boy was I right. 10 cranks up, I get a hard take down!! On my anchovy. I set the circle hook and then I get the salmon pumps! I get it to surface and it takes off running left, right and splashed all over the surface. It Peels line ZZzzzZZZzz… and I hear Tony in the background “Keith you on?” …yes sir! It came in hot so I had to make sure it was ready, and i’m ready. It finally gives up and I get an easy net job.
