Learn to Catch Salmon from a Kayak

I Arrived at Bolinas at day break and ran into a few NCKA brothers. It is that time of the year when I make my annual pilgrimage to this sacred land of large fish and legendary stories. The shore breaks were small and welcoming, compared to pass adventures. The dangers of the surf launch (Lagoon and Brighton ave) are well documented so I’ll leave it there.

The brownish-red water color, 58 degree temp and full moon were all bad signs, however, the stacks of bait through out the entire area was a great sign! I loaded the yak and made my way out.

The boats arrived early, as usual, and the morning feeding frenzy started. The birds worked the massive bait balls and the early morning salmon marauders all took their places among the fleet. I grabbed my sabiki and pulled some tray size live bait. (My preferred salmon fishing method). I sent a live one down below the bait ball and waited for the action.

About 20 minutes into my drift, i see the familiar tap tap tap from the tip of my fishing rod. Oh…something is on. I gently pulled the rod from the rod holder and fed the fish some line…then I fed it some more.
The tip indicated the fish was still working the bait…I waited. Then my rod BENDS OVER!

BENDO! FishON! I felt the weight of the fish bend my rod straight into the water as it peels off 25-40 ft of line off my spool. From the back of my kayak I see the fish make a leap and thrash the surface of the water before making a b-line towards me. I quickly gain back line and peddle fast to keep the tension on the hook. It made multiple circles to tire it out and it made multiple blistering runs to get off the hook.

The thoughts of multiple lost fish through out the season drifted in and out of my mind. I was wondering if I was self destructive when it comes to salmon fishing. LOL, but I keep my cool and cleared my thoughts. —This one is going in the boat, or I’ll never hear the end of it from “my friends” gesh.

I get it under my boat and it floats upside down. It makes one more last hearted burst then goes straight in the net. Wooh! My first kayak salmon of the year, and it was great to get the monkey off my back.

  1. Awesome story.
    Love the details.

I would love to go to Bolinas but have never beach launched. ..
    a little concerned.
Are you going again anytime soon?

    1. @Donn i see some of the boat launching from inside the lagoon. I think they are locals that know how to navigate the surf and swells outside there. i don’t own a boat so i can’t speak much to it. However, i think the majority of boats launch from inside the bay(Berkley, Emeryville, Sausalito) and make the trek north. Hope this helps.

  2. Aww man I went out Sunday too. Tried Golden Gate Bridge area left from Horseshoe Bay. Want to give Bolinas a try. So safest launch is from lagoon and Brighton Ave? Is there a ramp and parking? Next time you go I would like to give it a try.
    Thanks

    1. Steve, best place is to launch from Brighton and the lagoon. I prefer Brighton since it has only one shore break. However (this is a big HOWEVER), during high tide the water goes straight up to the launch. Basically you have a short and small window to make it safely. Mix in a south and long period swells and things get pretty hairy. (No joke).

The Lagoon has multiple breaks, so just making it in and out takes some patience and know how. No guarantees of safe landings either. Many friends have ate it in the surf many times. Not to scare anyone but knowing the terrain helps everyone stay safe. –TLA
