Two Day Tesla Camping Trip at New Bullards Bar Reservior
By The Lost Anchovy – Feb 7, 2024
Welcome to this episode of TlA. This week i travel up the Sierra mountains on a two day Tesla camping trip to new Bullards bar reservoir to target Kokanee salmon. I go over tips that I use to get these fish at Bullards. These are tried tips that have worked for me. I also show you my updated Tesla camping set up — it’s sweet! So much to unpack on this episode. Let’s get started!
Introduction
Winter fishing is not everyones cup of tea. As the days become shorter, the mornings become colder, and the fish less active; most fisherman hang up their rods and reels for the comforts of the cabin, house and a warm living room – I don’t blame them.
When I was a young Chov grinding it out in the dearth of winter for a few fish that was the standard; rain or shine, wet or dry, cold or colder (yes there is only those two options), frozen fingers or frozen toes, I was out there. Every fish was a grind, but the bite was that much more rewarding.
Today Moo says “you growing soft Chovy”. It’s hard for me to give a rebuttal. I’ve said it before – The man loves pain. Chovy still grinds it out but forgive me if I take a few comforts. Ok… Maybe a lot of comfort AKA Tesla camping.
To the hardcore year round kayak anglers – Chovy applauds you.
Targeting Kokanee at New Bullards Bar Reservior
There are few lakes that produces through the winter. When we think of winter fishing often it is people cutting a piece of ice through lake; sitting in the cold, and jigging for a few fish under a snow packed lake. Either way, it’s cold, it’s miserable, and it’s for people like moo who loves pain.
However, in California, we are blessed with moderate to good weather year round; and yes we pay for it – In everything. So let’s trade in the comforts of the remote and thanksgiving football freezing fingers and toes!
Where is New Bullards Bar
New Bullards Bar Reservoir, which is located about 45 minutes outside the City of Marysville on Marysville Road, has 55 miles of shoreline with more than 20 miles of trails, most of which are located in the Plumas and Tahoe national forests. A rather shallow lake, New Bullards Bar is known for warmer water and for its great fishing. (source:https://www.yubawater.org/253/New-Bullards-Bar)
Conclusion
There is lots to love about fishing at New Bullards Bar especially for a beginner. I always recommend learning to kayak fishing at a lake or reservoir. Lakes are perfect for learning the ins and out of your kayak, practicing self rescue while having and enjoyable day out on the water.
Check my article: Essentials of kayak Fishing this will help you to learn the basics before venturing out. I do recommend taking a safety and kayak fishing class at California Canoe and Kayak with our certified instructors. The staff are knowledgeable and will help answer any questions about kayak fishing you may have.
Thats all for this blog. Have a great time. Learn to catch one of the best tastings salmon, and learn to kayak fish in a protected area. I’ll catch you guys out on the water.
