Tomales Bay Kayak Crabbing

Written by the Lost Anchovy 12.12.203

I travel to Tomales Bay with CCK team member Moomoo Outdoors as I explore crabbing Tomales Bay for the first time. I have fished here many times but this is the first time attempting hooping for crabs. It was a cold and freezing morning but after the sun came out the crabs started to crawl into the pots.

Paul provides an update on the current kayak fishing exemption petition to CDFW which will be heard this Thursday December 14, 2023. Links below to participate. It was great fun with lots of friends. Come join us on this episode.

Where to Launch:

There is are few locations to launch your boat when in Tomales Bay. Most kayakers and boaters launch from the Millers boat ramp. For now, this boat ramp is free during the winter but there are launch fee that is enacted during the spring. Over all this location is very reasonably prices compared to other boat launches such as Santa Cruz, Berkley and HMB where there is just price gauging in my opinion.

Remember if you are launching from the boat ramp to start to the far right or left and provide the large spaces for boats that are launching. This is just basic boat ramp etiquette. Read my article on kayak fishing etiquette here.

Updated regulations:

For now the regulations are still the same. Only 5 3/4 crabs are allowed for retention with a limit of 10 per day. Currently only hoops are allowed for sport fishing. Commercial fishing is currently closed for Dungeness crabs so now is good time to get it before they come out. Check out my crabbing tutorial here

Conclusion:

This is my first time crabbing at Tomales bay and it was a good one. I really enjoy the lake atmosphere when conditions are nice. Over all there I will probably come back to sometime this winter for another limit and maybe some Tesla Camping.

I hope to see you there!! – TLA

  1. Hi, is the Camping trip at Bullards Bar still on for May 10-12, 2024? If so, I’d like to join for Saturday Fishing. I will stay at a hotel and fish on Saturday.

    Thanks

I’ll be up at Shelter Cove this weekend for the Annual Give Me Shelter Kayak Fishing Tournament.
I’m sure some of the kayakers will up there. There are always some fishing that lake. Good Luck –TLA
