Did I tell you guys I’m not a big fan of fishing in cold weather? Well Eddie “The Sturgeon”, or Moo can attest to that fact. They have fished with me in cold and often times freezing weather but i think this is the first time that I have fished in sub-degree freezing weather.
Welcome winter Tahoe/Sierra Fishing!
To be honest, I’ve camped in freezing weather, here in the US and in other countries, and…well, I still don’t like it, even with all the cold water gear. It’s cold and this Chovy is not a fan of cold weather. Maybe I’m against becoming frozen tray bait but it yeah…it’s not comforting.
So recently, I’ve been on this self destructive path to fish freshwater, and it has pushed me to areas I’m not too comfortable with. I’m also being pushed internally to grow and learn so I made a good faith effort this year to tackle the fresh water.
Let me provide some context. Before I dive too far into this blog post. About 3 years ago, I made my first attempt at fishing freshwater. I found the lack of fish size and hours of “NOT” catching fish sucked pretty bad…so I did what any normal person would do — I gave up and went back to what I was comfortable doing .. AKA catch big halibut, salmon, lingcod …you get the point.
This time around, I’m a grown up Chovy, and understand that I face many of the same obstacles when I started to fish the salt, so I put on my big boy pants and stuck it out. To my astonishment I’ve come to enjoy the different aspects of the fishery. Many of friends are confused and often times perplexed by this a-bout face. I’m confused and they are confused that I’m confused! Lol.
To Infinity and Beyond!
Like buzz light year and his plastic wings. I could be in for a rude awaking when I leap off the deep end not knowing if my wings are real or not, however…for now, I have come to appreciate freshwater fishing and all it brings. It has rekindled a primal fire from my early days of Kayak Fishing. I’m excited where this is going. Maybe it’s the journey into the unknown or the fulfillment for my need to grow, but so far it has been good for the soul.
Can a Chovy live in freshwater? I might be the first of my kind and possibly the last, but the adventure continues. Here is a recent trip to Union Valley Reservoir that I took with the CCK fishing team. Good luck and tight lines —TLA
