Submitted Questions
Q: “What advice would you give those who are paddlers vs peddlers?”
A: My best advice is to keep tension on the line at all times and wear out the fish. Paddlers don’t have the advantage of peddling to keep tension on the line so maintain tension by reeling in any slack line is very important, especially for paddlers.
Q: “How do you know when to start the netting process on a salmon?”
A: It is very rare that anyone will net a salmon the first time they see color on a fish. Most fish still have a lot of fight left before succumbing a net. If a fish is still actively fighting against you and running away from the net — it is not ready. A defeated fish will be led to the net without much resistance.
Q: “When is it most likely salmon will start to bite? ”
A: ” Over the years, i find there are two particular times when salmon like to bite. 1) Early morning bite or 2) during tidal changes. Most fish are tidal and will start biting once the tides start moving. I recommend targeting the window during tidal changes, and look for indicators such as scattered bait, diving birds, and feeding whales to point you in the right direction”
Q: “What hooks and set up do you recommend for salmon fishing?”
A: There are many ways to fish salmon and i recommend reviewing my salmon fishing tutorial to learn about reach one. (i.e. Trolling, Mooching, Trooching) and the different gear associated with each one. For trolling i like to use a fast tip with medium action on the body such as the qifshing rockjigger rod, or the Shimano Trevela 7 Ml, paired with owners no escape hooks.
