Day 1

Got off work at 6:00 p.m and was on my way home to SJ.  By 12:00 p.m. I had my gear packed up and was in bed with dreams of humbolt Monster Salmon. At 2:00 a.m my alarm bell goes off, and by 2:30 I’m in the car. ( I don’t think I slept…lol)

Pulled an all nighter on the road and arrived at the Cove by 8:00 a.m. I was greeted with dense fog, moderate swells, and light wind.  I was stoked to read Mantaska report that there was a bite the other day.

Got to the fishing grounds and spoke with a local on the water. He told me it has been good at the cove lately (Salmon). It didn’t take long before I got my first tap tap. I feed the salmon the herring I brought and soon loaded up. FISH ON!!  I got it to surface and saw a nice silver. (Catched and Released it). I drop back down a new volunteer and 10 minutes later my rod gets slammed. I get it out of the rod holder and started to reel in line but the hook pops off. (Damn barbless). The bite picked up around 1:00 p.m. in front of the lighthouse. The wind and swells also started to get rougher too.  I hooked up with a starry flounder and at 3:30 p.m. I get my first King Salmon hit that stuck.  I was a smaller one but a KEEPER!

The bite slowed down but was still consistent as the small patches of salmon moved through the cove.   At 4:00 p.m. I started marking some really fishy arcs on my FF.  All of a sudden I get a HUGE TAKE DOWN on my pole and it bends 90 degrees into the water and my  reels starts burning line. FISH ON!! Salmon, PAC BUTT, Sea Lion??? , THRESHER?! I don’t know! Sht I’m getting spooled. I was taken back by the sudden hit but finally got myself composed.

After 40 minutes and a lot of back and forth my line finally gives out and cracks.  =( It’s probably best, cause I would have tried to land that beast alone. (not a good idea, as I’ll find out the next day)

Day 2

Arrived at the beach around 7:45 a.m. Started to unpack the yak and noticed a familiar face. LoletaEric! I came over and introduce myself. We chatted it up before we went our ways.

OTW by 8:15 a.m. The water cleared up and the temperature was warmer. The salmon bite was almost non-existent except for a few here and there.  Eric and I chatted on the intel but concluded it just wasn’t happening.

1:00 p.m. things started to get better and I was picking more fish (RF), then I heard a familiar voice on the Radio. “KEITH KEITH, I’m on a really big salmon or that thresher you were talking about!”. I saw Eric in the far distance, with his TUNA rod, completely bent over.

I came over to assist. As I came closer I hear eric say “holy s$T” as he gets a first glimpse of  the Thresher. Hahah… As I get closer my first words were “holy s$T”.  After a good 35-40 minutes, and some teamwork we landed the beast on my yak.

We fished for a bit longer and called it a day. I helped eric clean the fish and watched him eat the beating thresher heart.(Gnarly dude) It was the perfect end to an unreal weekend. If anyone ask me about shelter cove,  I’ll say.. “Yeah, you gotta go and live the dream brotha”. – Lost Anchovy
